HISTORY

Now hosting 2.5 million passengers every year, Aberdeen Airport was officially opened in 1934 by Eric Gandar Dower.  Eric was looking for a quick and easy way to get around the northern islands. The proliferation of the Airline industry and airplanes becoming more commonplace made this an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.  Now it has four runways and the busiest heliport in the world. 

During World War II, the airport had a large role as a military base for combat aircraft.  The military forces used Aberdeen Airport as a staging ground for forces that were preparing to go into combat.  This helped to expand the airport because the military needed the bigger facilities in order to support the troops and the vehicles they used.  Many vehicles would be staged and loaded onto transport planes, then flown to wherever they are needed most. 

After the discovery of oil in the North Sea, business really picked up in Aberdeen airport because of the high traffic of helicopters ferrying workers out to the oil rigs.  Because of this rapid growth, the British Airports Authority invested several million dollars into Aberdeen Airport, which included better Aberdeen Airport Parking structures and facilities.  With this money Aberdeen Airport also built a new terminal and started developing Aberdeen Airport Parking.
