HISTORY

Doncaster Airport, or Robin Hood Airport as it is also commonly known, has a relatively small amount of history because the airport was only opened in its current state in 2005. Since 2005 Doncaster Airport and the Doncaster Airport parking facilities have increased greatly in popularity as the airport continues to thrive. However the site of Doncaster Airport and the Doncaster Airport parking facilities do have a history which dates back almost 100 years.

The airport was initially opened in 1915 as a military airport and its first major use was as a base for the Royal Flying Corps during World War One. The Doncaster Airport parking facilities didn’t exist back then because the airport was not open for commercial use. The airport was also used for the Second World War although this time its primary function was as a training base. Doncaster Airport continued to be used for military purposes up until the 1990s when it was decommissioned in 1995.

As of 2005 the airport re-opened for commercial use with new specific Doncaster Airport parking facilities to cater for the influx of new passengers. Doncaster Airport is now the newest airport in the UK and it is also home to brand new parking facilities.

Despite initial petitioning against Doncaster Airport, it is now widely deemed as a success and by 2007 the airport had dealt with almost 2.3 million passengers in total. Many of these passengers take advantage of the flights from Doncaster to destinations in Europe such as Mallorca, Amsterdam and Prague. During 2007, various long haul flights to North and Central America were introduced although these have now been discontinued.

When passengers arrive at the airport they often make use of the Doncaster Airport parking facilities, which were developed for the 2005 opening. Doncaster Airport parking facilities include a parking lot for both long and short stay options. For business orientated passengers there is also a parking facility located right next to the terminal and this is known as the premium parking lot. There is also a drop off and pick up Doncaster Airport parking facility right outside the terminal that allows passengers to park for up to 15 minutes for free.

Nowadays Doncaster Airport caters to approximately 800,000 passengers per year, many of whom use parking options available. Although the airport only has a young history, it is now starting to establish itself amongst other regional airports.
