HISTORY
Originally a World War II RAF airfield known as RAF Goosepool and later on as RAF Middleton St. George, the military oversaw production for awhile after construction of what is now known as a Durham Tees Airport parking and facilities. They continued to expand and improve on it until in 1963 when they no longer deemed the area as an integral part to their military operations, finally resulting in the decision to close down and leave the base.
Quickly seizing on the opportunity, the civilian sector began building more on it and added Durham Tees Airport Parking and Hotel for better accommodation. The airport was then renamed Teesside Airport and was opened to the public in 1966 by Princess Margaretha of Sweden. And since Durham Tees Airport parking terminal itself is located ten miles west of Middlesbrough in Northeast England, it conveniently provides services for both leisure passengers and local business communities.
In 2003, the six local authorities- Cleveland Borough, Redcar and Hartlepool, Middlesborough, Stockton-on-Tees, Darlington and Durham Councils -agreed on retaining the company’s twenty-five percent shares and entrusted the majority seventy-five percent shareholding of the Durham Tees Airport parking and other facilities to the Peel Airport Group. To date, the Vancouver Airport Services has acquired a total of sixty-five percent share of the Peel Airport Group while the local authority shareholders still maintain their twenty-five percent ownership of the airport inclusive of its Durham Tees Airport parking terminal.
Recent completion of an access road leading to the terminal plus improvements on the Durham Tees Airport parking area is among the significant investments made at Durham Tees Airport. Announcements have been made regarding plans for a uniquely developed twin-terminal which will divide the terminal between two individual areas for the enhancement of passenger services and facilitation. One area will be designated as premium quality, targeted at business travelers and scheduled services while the other one will handle low cost services and holiday charters.
Several airlines provide scheduled flight services at the airport for travelers originating from or coming to Durham Tees Airport parking terminal. Carriers operating from here include Aer Lingus Regional, Eastern Airways and KLM. The final name change in 2004 from Teesside Airport to Durham Tees Airport ( has made its location more significant on international travel maps, thus, providing a convenient and modern gateway for visitors of the region and further adhering to the regional tourism commitment of Durham Tees Airport.
