DUTY FREE
Major Duty Free Outlets
One of the things people most look forward to when making their transit through any international airport is the incredible shopping afforded by the Duty Free stores. The Prestwick Airport’s offerings are to be found in the departure lounge, just beyond the check-in counters after the Prestwick Airport parking facilities. No other shop outside of the airport can compete with the prices offered by the Duty Free shop, thanks to the exclusion of Import Tax on all the products for sale. So, whether your vice is tobacco, wine, perfumes, beauty products, designer labels or even electronic gadgetry, the Prestwick Duty Free Stores has volumes in store for the thrifty traveller.
Duty Free Limits
While offering those luxury items we can’t seem to do without at 17% less than any shop outside the Prestwick Airport’s Duty Free store, there are limitations on the amount passengers can take through customs with them. Perfume is just such an item that catches the attention of custom officials. The permitted volume of perfume is 50ml and for Eau de Toilette, 250ml. Other restrictions apply to still wine (90 litres), beer (110 litres), spirits (10 litres), ports and sherry (20 litres) and tobacco products (3kg). Those that are already duty and tax paid in EU can be obtained without restrictions.
Hot Items
While the Duty Free Store in the main terminal building (close to the Prestwick Airport parking facilities) offers a great many gifts and products for incredible discounted prices, the hot items are those that simply cannot be bought anywhere else for even close to the same price. In fact, the hot items available at the Duty Free Store - such as perfumes, colognes, designer clothing, beauty and skincare products and sunglasses - are traditionally too expensive for many people to consider purchasing them outside of the airport premises, making the duty free store a very special shopping experience.
Carry-on luggage
While most of the items purchased at the Duty Free store are allowed to be taken in a passenger’s carry-on luggage, there are certain things one should be wary of. The security desk at customs is going to be alerted by excessive quantities of alcohol and tobacco products. Even if you are simply stocking up, it would be best to perhaps only take two bottles of any alcohol and one carton of cigarettes or box of cigars with you onto the airplane at Prestwick Airport. Also be careful of the volume of perfume or cologne you take in your carry-on luggage and be sure to adhere to the Duty Free limitations. Liquids purchased from duty free must be kept unopened and inside the sealed bag provided at the point of purchase.
